THE PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGE November 2006 Volume 1
Where We Are Heading
Currently the US spends 16% of the gross domestic product (GDP) on health care. Over the next 3 decades as the population ages, health care will take up more of the GDP. By 2030 about 25% of the US economy will be spent on health care. Most of the healthcare will be paid for by Medicare or insurance and you and I will foot the bill. What this means is that health care will be so expensive that it could bankrupt us not to mention that with cost going up, it mean that the US health status will continue to decline, unless . . . . . . ..
Celebrex, More Complications
From the New England Journal of Medicine comes a report that looked at the popular pain reliever Celebrex and it ability to prevent colorectal polyps. Yes, it reduced the risk however it DOUBLED the risk of serious cardiovascular problems including heart attacks, strokes, heart failure and death. In a separate journal, Circulation, they reported that Celebrex is too risky to be used for polyp prevention.
Another Complication of Diabetes
At the 10th International Conference on Alzheimers Disease and Related Disorders a new theory being presented suggest that diabetes or even a precursor condition might somehow set the stage for Azheimers disease. The implications are staggering if true because the USA is in the midst of a diabetes epidemic. Nearly 61 million people in the US have diabetes. Having a pre-diabetic condition resulted in a 70% increased risk of developing diabetes. Weight loss and exercise can bring down blood sugar levels and this can prevent diabetes and protection from Alzheimers.
Want to Live Longer, Get Married
Studies have found that unmarried adults tend to die earlier than those who are married. In one study it showed that between 1989 and 1997 those who had been widowed were almost 40% more likely to die than married people living with their spouses. The never-married penalty was greater for men than women. The greater levels of social isolation associated with having never married is associated with larger health consequences.
Secondhand Smoke is Deadly
From the US surgeon general comes a report that states secondhand smoke is a health hazard at any level. The 700 page report states that there is massive and conclusive evidence of the alarming public health threat posed by second hand smoke and finds that smoking bans are the only way to protect non-smokers. Secondhand smoke is more than an annoyance but a serious health hazard. Nearly 50,000 non-smokers die from secondhand smoke each year. It also causes infections and inflammation such as ear infections and asthma in children and low birth weight or preterm deliveries.
Obesity Starts Young
Obesity has reached epidemic proportions. Those who carry excess weight later on into their lives may be cutting the quality and length of life short. Unfortunately the roots of this mid-age bulge, is rooted in our youth. Consider that 20% of our children are now overweight or obese and those who gain that weight during late childhood or adolescence are at the most risk for adult obesity. The solution for our children is simple. They must eat better quality of food, eliminate the ''junk'' food and exercise more. It is easier to change children habits than adults especially when the adults are paying for the children's food. However the biggest risk factor for obese kids is having parents who are overweight so set the proper example.
The Big Lie
Sugar free products. They were going to save us. In 2004, 180 million Americans were buying sugar free products. Low sugar-packaged items represented the second fastest growing segment (behind organics) in the good-for-you product industry. Cutting out sugar seemed to be a good idea for a country that is 60% overweight. Research suggested this could help you lose weight but our expanding waistlines are suggesting it isn't. In 2004 a study showed rats that were fed artificially sweetened liquids for 10 days, they lost the ability to gauge the calorie content of foods containing real sugar. In nature the sweeter the food the greater the calories so we can gauge our intake. The artificial sweeteners may be interfering with this process.
Music Can Improve Your Health
Music can affect key areas of your brain that regulates functions for good health. When a person listens to music that simulates positive memories and/or images, this stimulates an area of your brain that controls heart rate, breathing and blood pressure. Music can help you fall asleep. Soft restful music can be like a sedative by reducing the stress hormones that circulate in the blood stream. For pain music does not eliminate it but can help your brain be distracted and that diverts your attention. Find music that stimulate you positively and engages you in taking you to your happy place.
