FAST FOOD, HOW MUCH, HOW OFTEN?

By Dennis R. Buckley, D.C.

From the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute comes a study that shows young adults who frequently ate at fast-food restaurants gain more weight and had a greater increase in insulin resistance, which could lead to diabetes, in early middle age.

Those who ate at fast-food restaurants more than twice each week gained an extra 10 pounds and had a two-fold greater increase in insulin resistance. Diabetes is a major risk for heart disease.

Because obesity and diabetes are on the rise, the value of healthy eating habits is more essential than ever. Considering that fast-food consumption has increased in the US over the past three decades, eating in a healthy way is extremely difficult at a fast-food restaurant.

Fast-food restaurants recently have attempted to offer "healthier menus", the fact is most of the offering there are high in fat, sugar, calories, and low in fiber and nutrients. One meal at a fast-food restaurant may often contain enough calories to satisfy a person's caloric requirements for an entire day. Participants in this study were asked how often they ate at fast-food restaurants for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Participant's weight and insulin resistance were higher in both black and white subjects who ate frequently at fast-food restaurants compared to those who didn't.

In today's fast paced world, the utilization of fast-food restaurants is still increasing despite the health risks. What you can do is be more conscious of your choices at these types of restaurants.

* Keep portion sizes small (don't super size it) * Keep condiments and sauces on the side and use sparingly * Choose chicken and fish over beef * Ask for grilled or baked rather than fried * Avoid soda's and stick with unflavored tea or plain water

One of the reasons the parents should be watching their habits and choices is that the number one influence on their children's habits is them. With the fastest growing population in regards to obesity being children from 9 to 15, avoidance of fast-food restaurants and making smarter nutritional choices is essential to avoid a problem of "huge" magnitude later on as these obese children become obese adults and suffer from maladies associated with "older adults" as children.

Help yourself and your health with wiser choices and it will help your children and their future.
