Back to Basics

BACK TO BASICS by Dennis R. Buckley, DC
In learning any new skill, there are basics that must first be mastered to progress in your performance. In sports there are things that must be performed on the defensive side of things to empower the offense. In football it is tackling. In basketball it is rebounding and guarding. In baseball it is pitching and fielding. Usually when a team is not playing well the coach looks at how the team is performing the basics and goes back to them to have a strong foundation to build upon. Usually the problem lies in the improper execution of basics. In regards to your health there are two areas that are basic to provide a strong, healthy body. These two basic areas are not foreign to any of us but are ignored and thus the genesis of the problems we face in regards to health. Those two areas are exercise and eating habits. These two areas, for the most part, we have great control of. We can choose to be active physically or not. We can choose to make healthy food choices or not. When we "forget" to exercise discipline in these two areas we allow our selves to start to dysfunction in our activities of daily living and lose control of our health. Just like a coach whose team is not performing up to its potential, if we go back to basics, there lies the problem, a weak, neglected foundation. It is estimated that 70% of the problems that people seek help from doctors are self inflicted through neglect of physical activity or eating choices. This neglect has been estimated to cost the US over $1 Trillion dollars each year in lost production and associated cost that all could have been prevented. No matter where your health is today, exercise and proper eating are the foundations of a healthy body. Even if you have a diagnosed condition, such as diabetes, arthritis, or even heart disease, paying attention to your eating habits and exercise can have a profound effect on whatever treatment options you are utilizing. In fact not paying attention to basics can sabotage any and all other treatment options. Implementing exercise and eating habits can synergize with the other treatments and magnify their effects. In the San Gabriel Valley there are vast amounts of resources to help you get back to basics in these two areas. Make 2008 the year you strengthen your body and defenses by better choices.
