Have A Healthy Heart
by Dennis Buckley

Hello,

I hope your 2008 is going well. This month I am changing the format of the Performance Advantage to make it more personal.

First of all I would like to thank all of you for your subscribing to the Performance Advantage. I have received so many positive comments about the newsletter and mostly people say they like the Performance Advantage because it is concise, to the point, and besides the information that is easy to use, it gets you to think. Thanks for your feedback. Feedback is always appreciated whether it is a typo, grammatical error, or suggestions for future articles.

Yes, I actually write these myself as you can tell by the occasional typo.

What I would like to do is share a little bit about who Dr. Dennis Buckley is. I personally know some of you that are on this list but many I do not know so for those who think they know me, pay attention.

I am 50 years old and I am a third generation Southern California resident. I grew up in Downey, California and lived there until the age of 22. I moved to Orange County and lived there until I was 35. I then move to the San Gabriel Valley where I have lived since.

My first career was a paperboy. My second career was in the grocery industry. I worked in that industry for 18 years. A back injury led me to seek care from a chiropractor and it was there I discovered my calling. I graduated from high school in 1975 and in 1985 I returned to college.

Also at that time (1985) I had started running and in 1986 completed the innaugural City of Los Angeles Marathon in 4 hours and 3 minutes. I ran 2 more marathons in 1988 and 1989. In 1987 I missed that race because I injured myself overtraining.

While in college I was trying to find what in the world I really wanted to do. My chiropractor in Costa Mesa, California, Scott McCall, asked me a question one Friday morning in November, 1986. Why are you going to school? What are you studying for? I said I was trying to figure that out myself. He suggested I become a chiropractor, that I would be good at it with my athletic background.

Little did I know that day would change the entire direction of my whole life. I went home and called Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (LACC) to get information and they invited me to visit the campus. I went that day. I liked what I saw but in talking to the counselor it became clear that all the events of my life the past few years all were intertwined and I was being called to be a chiropractor. That afternoon I decided, "I am going to be a chiropractor." That was November of 1986. In January of 1987 I started taking all my prerequisite courses, chemistry, biology, anatomy, math, physics, all the core classes and whatever was needed to get in. I went to school full time and worked full time, summer school too. I was able to finish my prerequisites and in January of 1990 I started at LACC. I Graduated in April of 1993 with honors. I started working in Pasadena at Budincich Chiropractic prior to graduating and continued working there for 11 years being mentored by Dr. Mike Budincich or Dr. Bud as he is known. In 2003 I moved my practice to the University Health Center in Pasadena, a satellite clinic of LACC where I could practice as usual, teach and mentor other up and coming chiropractors.

While in practice I have become very involved in the community in many ways. I am on the executive board of the Pasadena Chamber of Commerce. I am team doctor at 4 local high schools. I work with the Junior All-America Football in the San Gabriel Valley performing pre-participation physicals. I am an instructor for the National Football League in their coaching academy and work with their Junior Player Development Program. I have served my profession as president and director of the local chapter of the California Chiropractic Association (CCA). I have served as president of the CCA and served in many executive positions for the CCA. I have been a member of the Rotary club. I work with various charities, Foothills, Union Station, Salvation Army, Pasadena Junior Chamber of Commerce, 5 Acres, and other entities.

I have been blessed to live and work in such a great community and be in an incredible profession where each day I witness miracles.

My passion is teaching and inspiring people. That is why I created The Performance Advantage as a way to reach out to more people and bring the good news that health resides within each and every one of us and we can tap into this resource ourselves through our day to day choices.

I also provide personal coaching to people wanting to get too wherever they dream of going. I am a Pass It On Practitioner founder and student utilizing the inspirational movie, Pass It On, as the foundation of the coaching. Pass It On is an incredible experience for it's more than a movie, it's a movement! (go to www.passitontoday.com)

I also teach for the Southern California University of Health Sciences School for Professional Success, teaching networking and stress management.

I am a partner in a new company, The Elite Adventure Corp where we put on Vision to Manifestation weekends in such places as Yosemite, to help people break through self limiting beliefs, see their vision and make it manifest in their lives.

I also have a consulting firm called, The Performance Advantage that provides Health and Wellness programs for small business through a HR company, True Team Dynamics where they are creating a new working world that creates a bigger pie that is more delicious and nutritious for everyone. You will be hearing more of this in the upcoming years as this company has the ability and resources to transform how we do business in this country. You will have heard about it here first.

Along with all this I find time to exercise, barbeque, play some golf, travel, exercise and enjoy friends and family.

So you can help me in my mission to transform the health of humanity by sharing the Performance Advantage with everyone you know. The price is terrific, the information is priceless, and the results are amazing.

I hope each and every one of you is blessed with abundant health and happiness.

THE PERFORMANCE ADVANTAGE

February 2008 Volume 2

HAVE A HEALTHY HEART by Dennis R. Buckley, DC

The holidays are over, the reality has set in. You just received all the credit cards bills. "Boy was I generous," you might say. Well take heart, the attitude of giving is a health building activity.

February also has Valentines Day which also involves the heart as the heart is the sign of love. Love is healthy also.

Hearts, Hearts everywhere. What does this have to do with health?

Well a healthy heart is essential for you to live. Your heart stops beating and you stop living.

Unfortunately heart disease is one of the most common causes of death in the US and conversely the one disease that can be prevented.

Smoking, obesity, alcohol abuse, diabetes, inactivity, all can contribute to an early demise from heart disease. Exercise, healthy diet, limited alcohol, supplements, a fulfilling career and happiness can prevent heart disease.

"Career and happiness? I can understand the exercise, the healthy diet, supplements and even the alcohol, but what does career and attitude have to do with it?"

There was a study performed years ago that looked at risk factors for heart disease. They looked at blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, body mass index, family history, lifestyle and other factors trying to find what common factors present would prevent heart disease.

Surprisingly the researchers found that if you could answer yes to two questions, you had the lowest chance of having heart di
